Boy in the Moment
Boy in the Moment

Week 43
Is that all we'll use? 1,2,3,4,5,6? Counting, only six colors framed our palette.
I think I've posted the palette pictures before.... In contrast they look like a candy filled plate. However, I felt that using such a limited palette was actually really restful. We used the primed wood to be an additional color- you must think in negative space to do so. Covering your canvas fully is a high crime. It must show, it must mix with our paints to create subtle tones and a cohesive look. I loved capturing the light falling on each fold of his warm, messy bed. Filtering through the windows to softly fill his room.
The small boy sits in silence (a rare moment!) gazing into his hand. What is he holding? Is it what gives him a moment of serenity and pensiveness? Is he waiting for his mom? Why does he not cry out? What is he thinking?
We had some bad news that day, about a family member's mother being diagnosed with lung cancer. In this moment I see him in this small boy, the same small one that resides in each of us. Fragile, we hope. Vulnerable, we pray. Those are the small elements that actually make us strong and wise at the same time.
